Meet our Samoan Artist

Samoan Artist

Patrick Taoipu is our resident Samoan Artist. From Carson, California, this skilled portrait painter lovingly crafts images of Pacific people. We went knocking at his faleo’o to find out more about the man behind the art.

How did you find One Samoana?

Found out about 1samoana from 1samoana natives in other websites.

What’s the funniest/craziest thing you ever witnessed/did in the village?

Funniest thing was watching people in the chat rooms pretending to be super macho/super sexy, but forgot to tell the chatters that they had 6 kid’s and was married.

What’s an experience you had that made you SO proud to be Samoan?

I was at a Polyfestival as a vendor for the first time displaying my art, and a patron walking up to my booth was admiring my work, he heard many other patron’s compliment my art, and then one person asked my ethnicity, when I told the man I was Samoan, he turned his head around and gazed over at me, and then looked at the art piece again, and then started to tear up, he then came around to the front of my booth and whispered to me that he was so proud of me. I literally wept.

Tell us about your passion/hobby/work

My passion of course is my art.

Whats a project you’re working on that you want everybody to know about?

I am currently working on an art piece for the Pacific Island Ethnic Arts Museum of Long Beach.

Your final thoughts and shout outs:

Empower yourself by honing your skills, and let your God given talent dictate your path.

* This portrait of Sean Makaiau (right) is my favourite of the paintings I’ve seen by Samoan Artist. Beautiful face, beautifully depicted.
* Visit Samoan Artist in his faleo’o.
* Check out his artwork in his village photo album
* The painting behind him in his profile photo is the one he’ll be submitting to the Pacific Island Ethnic Arts Museum of Long Beach. It is a portrait of his beautiful niece.

Known offline as Lillian (Lils, Lei'a) Arp, Hamo Geek Girl is just learning what it means to be Samoan. When she's not here, she's over at Manaui: Savour Oceania mostly talking about her other favourite topic: Food!
